A Secret in The Wings
University of Wisconsin - La Crosse (2023)
In an industry where directors and producers hold the power, especially over young, vulnerable actors, admitting discomfort or fear can feel impossible and even career-threatening. Intimacy direction seeks to interfere in these dynamics and create safe, comfortable environments for all involved in the entertainment industry. Intimacy direction is similar to stage combat, in that it has set regulations with the intention of keeping everyone involved safe and at ease. As the most basic violence onstage is carefully choreographed with extra safety measures and precautions, so should even the most basic personal contact. This research and proposal aims to officially introduce UWL’s Department of Theatre Arts to intimacy direction by way of clear written protocol and standards. Using information collected from interviews of professional intimacy directors, collegiate educators, and other literary resources, I will work with current faculty to create and implement a UWL Theatre Intimacy Protocol that is safe, accessible, realistic, and sustainable.
