Intimacy Coordination

Grace has worked in intimacy coordination since 2021, including writing and receiving a research grant to establish Intimacy protocols within the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse's Department of Theatre Arts. She has acted as Intimacy Coordinator on three productions and as an Intimacy Consultant on two productions.

Establishing Intimacy Protocols within the

UWL Department of Theatre Arts :

A Research Grant

In the spring of 2021, Grace was awarded an "Undergraduate Research and Creativity Grant" from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. This grant allowed Grace to research and propose policies for Theatrical Intimacy to the UWL Department of Theatre Arts. After submitting her proposal to the Theatre Faculty, they have worked on adapting and integrating it into the department with the help of new faculty member Mary Trotter. This work has continued on after Grace's graduation. The importance and far-reaching implications of this work can not be understated.

Research Grant Abstract:

"In an industry where directors and producers hold the power, especially over young, vulnerable actors, admitting discomfort or fear can feel impossible and even career-threatening. Intimacy direction seeks to interfere in these dynamics and create safe, comfortable environments for all involved in the entertainment industry. Intimacy direction is similar to stage combat, in that it has set regulations with the intention of keeping everyone involved safe and at ease. As the most basic violence onstage is carefully choreographed with extra safety measures and precautions, so should even the most basic personal contact. This research and proposal aims to officially introduce UWL’s Department of Theatre Arts to intimacy direction by way of clear written protocol and standards. Using information collected from interviews of professional intimacy directors, collegiate educators, and other literary resources, I will work with current faculty to create and implement a UWL Theatre Intimacy Protocol that is safe, accessible, realistic, and sustainable."
